    EL PASO
    by Winston Groom

This is a book to settle in with on long winter nights. El Paso will transport you to the times of the 1916 Mexican Revolution and the vicious border wars set in the harsh deserts and mountains of northern Mexico.. A railroad tycoon, known at the Colonel, is pulled into the conflict when two and a half million dollars in "beef on the hoof" are raided from his ranch. Believing that Pancho Villa stole the cattle, he hopes to gather a group of men brave enough to hunt down Villa and bring him to justice. If you like your stories with an historical background and filled with heroes, villains, shootouts, rescues, and even a bullfight, this is the epic for you. SMALL GREAT THINGS
    by Jodi Picoult

You know you're in for a compelling, "straight from the headlines" type of theme when you pick up one of Jodi's books. This one will be right at the top of the list. Her story takes on the challenging subjects of prejudice, race, justice, compassion, and privilege. We meet Ruth, a competent African-American labor & delivery nurse, who is caring for a newborn baby when she is told by her superiors that the baby's parents, who are white supremacists, demand that she not touch their baby. When the baby goes into cardiac arrest, and Ruth is the only one in the nursery, she is faced with the dilemma of following orders or intervening. It's a page turner from then on!

MICHELE BORBA SPEAKING AT CENTERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22; 7 PM at Centerville High School; 500 E. Franklin St., Centerville. The program will be in the Performing Arts Center behind the school. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Books&Co will have Dr. Borba’s book for sale at the event. The event is free. Seats are first-come, first-serve.

MICHELE BORBA, Ed.D will discuss her book, Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World. Why do studies show that kids are less happy and more stressed than in past generations despite our love? Why is peer cruelty increasing and bullying starting at younger ages? And what can parents and educators do about it? As an internationally recognized expert and author on children, teens, parenting, bullying and moral development, Dr. Borba addresses these issues head-on and provides tools parents need to teach their children empathy – and explains why caring for others is actually an essential life skill.

Dr. Borba aims to help strengthen children’s character and resilience, build strong families, create compassionate school cultures, and reduce peer cruelty. She has discussed these topic on the TODAY Show, the Early Show, CNN and Fox News, and scores of other media outlets. She served as a consultant to hundreds of schools, parent organizations, and corporations on bullying prevention. TOUCHSTONE
