This is a book to settle in with on long winter nights. El Paso will transport you to the times of the 1916 Mexican Revolution and the vicious border wars set in the harsh deserts and mountains of northern Mexico.. A railroad tycoon, known at the Colonel, is pulled into the conflict when two and a half million dollars in "beef on the hoof" are raided from his ranch. Believing that Pancho Villa stole the cattle, he hopes to gather a group of men brave enough to hunt down Villa and bring him to justice. by Jodi Picoult

You know you're in for a compelling, "straight from the headlines" type of theme when you pick up one of Jodi's books. This one will be right at the top of the list. Her story takes on the challenging subjects of prejudice, race, justice, compassion, and privilege. We meet Ruth, a competent African-American labor & delivery nurse, who is caring for a newborn baby when she is told by her superiors that the baby's parents, who are white supremacists, demand that she not touch their baby. When the baby goes into cardiac arrest, and Ruth is the only one in the nursery, she is faced with the dilemma of following orders or intervening. It's a page turner from then on!

LISA BOUCHER INTRODUCES PERSONAL GROWTH BOOK

TUESDAY, JUNE 27; 7 PM

LISA BOUCHER will discuss her book, Raising the Bottom: Making Mindful Choices in a Drinking Culture. Dr. Leslie Dye, President, Medical Toxicology Foundation, says “Raising the Bottom is an excellent resource for anyone who suspects they or a loved one has a problem with alcohol. It doesn’t just focus on the problem of alcoholism, it emphasizes the solution and demonstrates that alcoholics can live wonderful, productive lives through sobriety. This is a book of hope.”

Boucher aims to dispel the presumption that you have to lose it all before you can accurately take stock of your life and make healthy choices. She aims to help people recognize the warning signs of alcoholism. She is a recovering alcoholic who made the choice to quit drinking in her late twenties, before giving birth to her twin sons. Now a registered nurse for over 24 years. She has witnessed the negative effects of alcohol and hopes she can help others to recognize the signs and to change course. SHE WRITES PRESS

Raising the Bottom received a starred review in the May 1 edition of Library Journal .
