    EL PASO
    by Winston Groom

This is a book to settle in with on long winter nights. El Paso will transport you to the times of the 1916 Mexican Revolution and the vicious border wars set in the harsh deserts and mountains of northern Mexico.. A railroad tycoon, known at the Colonel, is pulled into the conflict when two and a half million dollars in "beef on the hoof" are raided from his ranch. Believing that Pancho Villa stole the cattle, he hopes to gather a group of men brave enough to hunt down Villa and bring him to justice. If you like your stories with an historical background and filled with heroes, villains, shootouts, rescues, and even a bullfight, this is the epic for you. Winston Groom has also written Forrest Gump.

    SMALL GREAT THINGS
    by Jodi Picoult

You know you're in for a compelling, "straight from the headlines" type of theme when you pick up one of Jodi's books. This one will be right at the top of the list. Her story takes on the challenging subjects of prejudice, race, justice, compassion, and privilege. We meet Ruth, a competent African-American labor & delivery nurse, who is caring for a newborn baby when she is told by her superiors that the baby's parents, who are white supremacists, demand that she not touch their baby. When the baby goes into cardiac arrest, and Ruth is the only one in the nursery, she is faced with the dilemma of following orders or intervening. It's a page turner from then on!

JUDD WINICK INTRODUCES KIDS GRAPHIC NOVEL

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27; 6:30 PM

Award-winning cartoonist JUDD WINICK, creator of HILO, a funny, action-packed full color new middle grade graphic novel series, will introduce its third book, HILO: The Great Big Boom. Hilo may look like an ordinary kid, but he’s definitely not! When we last saw Hilo, DJ, and Gina in book 2, Gina had been sucked into a mysterious portal to who knows where! But friends don’t let friends disappear into Nowhere! It’s up to D.J. and Hilo to follow her. Will there be danger? Yes! Will there be amazing surprises? Of course! Will Gina end up being the one to save them? Definitely! Will they make it back to Earth before the portal closes again? Who knows?

As a special treat, STEVE HAMAKER, the colorist for HILO: The Great Big Boom will join JUDD at this event. You can get your HILO books signed by both of them!

This series will appeal to Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Big Nate fans. It has lots of slapstick humor with an appealing dose of friendship, acceptance, and adventure. You don’t necessarily need to start with Book 1 to enjoy the series. RANDOM HOUSE BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS
